Overview

NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex, 4, 9kDa pseudogene" (e.g., NDUFA4P, NDUFA4P2) is a human genomic DNA sequence that resembles the functional NDUFA4 gene, which encodes a nuclear-encoded subunit of mitochondrial Complex I. However, this pseudogene does not encode a functional protein or have any known direct biological activity. Pseudogenes such as this arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but typically acquire disabling mutations that prevent protein expression. Unlike the functional NDUFA4, which is a mitochondrial electron transport chain subunit, this pseudogene has no role in mitochondrial biology and is not implicated in disease or therapy response. This is not an active protein, enzyme, transporter, receptor, or functional non-coding RNA. It is a pseudogene (defective copy) and not appropriate to consider as a typical "target molecule/receptor" for pharmacological or biomarker studies. There are closely related functional genes (such as NDUFA4, which encodes a subunit of Complex I) and other functionally relevant paralogs (e.g., NDUFA4L2, with established roles in tumor metabolism), but these are separate entities from this pseudogene. In summary, ENSG00000229030 (NADH dehydrogenase 1 alpha subcomplex, 4, 9kDa pseudogene) is a genomic relic with no established biological function or role in drug action, disease, or as a biomarker.
