The NADH dehydrogenase 1 alpha subcomplex, 12 pseudogene (ENSG00000249888) is a non-protein-coding genomic locus related to the NDUFA12 gene. It does not encode a functional protein and therefore is not involved in cellular metabolism, mitochondrial electron transport, or disease pathology. Pseudogenes like this arise from duplication or mutation of protein-coding genes and typically do not produce biologically active products. In contrast, the protein-coding gene NDUFA12 is an accessory subunit of Complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, necessary for efficient transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone, and has been implicated in rare mitochondrial disorders such as Leigh syndrome when mutated.
