Overview

NALCN antisense RNA 1 (NALCN-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the NALCN gene, which encodes a sodium leak channel important in neuronal excitability[2][4]. NALCN-AS1 itself does not encode a protein and is categorized among antisense lncRNAs, which are known to regulate gene expression of their sense partners (such as NALCN) through a variety of mechanisms including transcriptional interference, RNA stability modulation, and chromatin remodeling[1][3]. While the biological functions of many antisense lncRNAs are still being elucidated, general functions include acting in cis (modifying local chromatin and gene expression) or trans (affecting distant loci by three-dimensional chromatin interactions or RNA-mediated processes)[3]. There are no documented drugs, biomarker roles, or direct disease associations for NALCN-AS1 at present[2][4]. Its main significance lies in the regulation of the NALCN gene; NALCN-AS1 is not considered a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
