This molecule is a natural antisense transcript (NAT) located opposite the COLQ gene locus. NATs are a class of noncoding RNAs transcribed from the DNA strand opposite to protein-coding genes. Many NATs regulate the expression of their sense (protein-coding) partners through epigenetic silencing, RNA interference, or by influencing mRNA processing and stability[2][3]. The transcript antisense to COLQ is annotated by genomic analyses but has not been experimentally characterized for function, disease association, or clinical relevance. There are no drugs, known biomarker roles, or safety signals associated with this NAT. Natural antisense transcripts (NATs) are prevalent throughout eukaryotic genomes and modulate gene expression through a variety of mechanisms, including transcriptional interference, RNA masking, recruitment of chromatin-modifying complexes, and, sometimes, the formation of double-stranded RNAs that trigger gene silencing[2][3]. In most cases, including the antisense to COLQ, the specific function remains unknown, though regulatory potential is inferred from the general properties of such transcripts.
