Nitric oxide synthase, endothelial (eNOS)

Target
eNOS
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Nitric Oxide Synthase
01

Overview

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), also known as NOS3, is an enzyme primarily found in vascular endothelial cells that catalyzes the production of nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine. NO is a crucial signaling molecule involved in vasodilation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and maintenance of vascular homeostasis. eNOS dysfunction, often due to decreased expression/activity, cofactor deficiency, or excessive oxidative stress, contributes to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, and heart failure.
