Nitric Oxide Synthase, Inducible (iNOS)

Target
iNOS
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Nitric Oxide Synthase
01

Overview

Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), also known as NOS2, is an enzyme responsible for the high-output production of nitric oxide (NO) in response to inflammatory stimuli. Unlike other isoforms of nitric oxide synthase, iNOS is not constitutively expressed but is induced primarily by cytokines and bacterial products. The enzyme plays a key role in immune defense mechanisms and inflammation. Overexpression or dysregulation of iNOS has been implicated in various diseases, including sepsis, osteoarthritis, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. It is considered a therapeutic target for selective inhibition strategies.
