Overview

Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is one of three major isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), the enzyme family responsible for synthesizing nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine. nNOS is constitutively expressed, primarily in neurons throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, but also found in skeletal muscle and some other tissues. It catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to NO and L-citrulline and is involved in synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation, learning, and memory formation. Overproduction or dysregulation of nNOS-derived NO has been implicated in several disease states, making it a therapeutic target.
