Nitric oxide synthase (endothelial) (eNOS)

Target
eNOS
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), also known as nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3), is an enzyme primarily responsible for the generation of nitric oxide (NO) in vascular endothelial cells. NO is a small, gaseous signaling molecule with critical roles in cardiovascular homeostasis, including vasodilation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and regulation of vascular tone. Loss or dysfunction of eNOS leads to impaired vasodilation, increased risk for hypertension, thrombosis, inflammation, and atherosclerosis progression.
