Overview

Nociceptors are specialized peripheral sensory neurons that detect and transmit information about potentially damaging stimuli (mechanical, thermal, or chemical) to the central nervous system, resulting in the perception of pain. They are not a single molecule or receptor, but a class of neurons characterized by the expression of certain ion channels, G-protein-coupled receptors, and neuropeptides that enable them to sense noxious stimuli and participate in processes such as neurogenic inflammation and pain transmission. Various drugs target the channels and receptors expressed by nociceptors to modulate pain. Summary: There is no unique "Peripheral nociceptor receptor"—this is an imprecise and incorrect designation for a therapeutic target. Nociceptors are classified as pain-sensing neurons, not a receptor, but they express a wide variety of molecular targets that are the focus of pain drug development.
