Novel transcript, antisense to cytochrome P450 2E1 (ENSG00000278518) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed in the opposite direction of the CYP2E1 gene. Natural antisense transcripts (NATs) can regulate their sense counterparts by diverse mechanisms, including modulation of transcription, chromatin structure, and transcript stability[9][1]. For CYP2E1, antisense transcription at its locus is believed to influence the regulation of CYP2E1’s sense transcript dynamics, potentially by altering chromatin architecture and transcription processing at the locus[1]. There is no evidence to date that this antisense RNA is involved in disease mechanisms or is a target of therapeutic agents. Its biological relevance may relate primarily to fine-tuning gene regulation in the region of CYP2E1.
