This molecule is a naturally occurring, long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the Nitric oxide synthase 1 adaptor protein (NOS1AP) gene. Natural antisense transcripts (NATs) like this are widespread and can modulate the expression of their sense (protein-coding) partners by various mechanisms, including transcriptional interference, RNA masking, and epigenetic modification of chromatin. The specific biological impact and clinical significance of this particular antisense transcript are not well characterized. There is currently no evidence that this RNA functions as a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme. Its major relevance is as a putative regulatory RNA, with possible implications for fine-tuning NOS1AP gene expression or chromatin state in specific contexts.
