Novel transcript, antisense to SMAD7" (ENSG00000299449) is a long non-coding RNA transcript expressed from the opposite DNA strand of the SMAD7 gene. Antisense lncRNAs like this can regulate the expression of adjacent or overlapping genes, such as SMAD7, potentially through chromatin modification, transcriptional interference, or RNA–RNA interactions. Research in model systems and genome-wide studies demonstrates that antisense transcription can alter the chromatin environment, decrease the rate of sense transcript (here, SMAD7 mRNA) production and processing, and increase transcript stability, though the effects on SMAD7-specific antisense transcripts in human health and disease are not well-characterized.
