Nucleic acid synthesis refers to the cellular processes by which DNA and RNA are produced in schistosomes. These pathways are essential for parasite growth, development, reproduction, and survival within the host. The synthesis of nucleic acids involves both de novo biosynthetic pathways and salvage pathways. Enzymes involved in nucleotide biosynthesis have been validated as drug targets, and antischistosomal drugs such as hycanthone have been shown to inhibit nucleic acid synthesis in *S. mansoni*. Molecular detection methods and single-cell RNA sequencing are used to study these pathways and identify potential new therapeutic targets.
