Target intelligence / Profile preview
Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 1 (OR8D1) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, specifically belonging to the large family of olfactory receptors. These receptors are primarily located in the cell membranes of olfactory sensory neurons in the nasal epithelium, where they detect a wide array of volatile odorant molecules [1]. Upon ligand binding, OR8D1 initiates a signal transduction cascade involving the activation of the olfactory-specific G protein (G(olf)), which stimulates adenylate cyclase to produce cAMP, eventually leading to neuronal depolarization [2]. While its primary function is sensory perception, OR8D1 and similar receptors are increasingly recognized for their ectopic expression in various non-olfactory tissues, including the gut and certain cancer cells [3]. Despite this, OR8D1 is not currently a primary therapeutic target for any approved pharmaceutical agents, and its specific ligand profile remains largely uncharacterized in clinical pharmacology [4]. Research into OR8D1 continues to explore its potential role as a biomarker or secondary target in sensory disorders and oncology [5].
Activation of the G protein-coupled receptor by odorant binding leads to the stimulation of adenylate cyclase, increasing intracellular cAMP levels and subsequent opening of ion channels.
