Osmotic Agent (Peritoneum)

01

Overview

An osmotic agent in the context of the peritoneum refers to a solute, most commonly glucose, that is introduced into the peritoneal cavity during peritoneal dialysis (PD) to create an osmotic gradient across the peritoneal membrane. This gradient drives ultrafiltration—the movement of water from blood vessels in the peritoneum into the dialysate—by osmosis. Other osmotic agents like icodextrin or amino acids can also be used. The effectiveness depends on agent concentration, membrane permeability, and the reflection coefficient.
