Osterix (Osx), also known as Sp7, is a transcription factor essential for osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. It is involved in driving the differentiation of mesenchymal precursor cells into osteoblasts and eventually osteocytes. Mutations in the SP7 gene have been associated with dysfunctional bone phenotypes, and it plays a critical role in the regulation of bone mass density. Osterix acts by inducing the expression of osteoblast-specific genes and inhibiting chondrocyte differentiation, maintaining the balance between bone and cartilage formation.
