Porin A subtype P1.4 from *N. meningitidis* is a trimeric β-barrel outer membrane protein whose surface-exposed variable regions define its immunotype and make it an important target for both natural immunity following infection and vaccine-induced protection—especially via OMV-based vaccines designed against serogroup B strains expressing this variant. It functions as a passive transport channel and a major surface antigen, eliciting bactericidal antibodies.
Antibody binding to variable regions leads to complement-mediated killing and/or opsonization, preventing bacterial survival/invasion.
