Target intelligence / Profile preview
Pancrelipase (Protease component) refers to the mixture of proteolytic enzymes, including trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase, derived from porcine pancreatic glands (StatPearls, 2023). These enzymes serve as the active components in pancreatic enzyme replacement therapies (PERTs) like Ultrase MT12. Their primary biological function is the hydrolysis of dietary proteins and polypeptides into smaller peptides and amino acids in the duodenum, which is critical for nutrient absorption (FDA, 2010). This target is essential for treating exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition resulting from cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or pancreatectomy, where the pancreas fails to secrete adequate digestive enzymes (CFF, 2023). By providing exogenous proteases, these therapies restore the body's ability to digest protein, preventing malnutrition and associated complications. The enzymes are typically administered in enteric-coated forms to protect them from gastric acid, ensuring they reach the small intestine where they function optimally at a neutral to alkaline pH (PubChem, 2024).
