Because this grouping spans multiple biological kingdoms and chemical classes, it is not a single therapeutic target but a category of disease-causing entities. Treatments targeting these agents range from antimicrobial drugs and antitoxins to immunotherapies and extracorporeal removal techniques like plasmapheresis. These interventions aim to neutralize the agent, prevent its replication, or physically remove it from the patient's circulation to restore homeostasis (StatPearls, 2023).

Mechanism of action

Mechanisms include the inhibition of microbial cell wall or protein synthesis, the neutralization of toxins by specific antibodies, and the depletion of autoantibodies through B-cell targeting or extracorporeal removal (StatPearls, 2023).
