Pepsinogen 3, group I (pepsinogen A) (PGA3)

Target
PGA3
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Aspartic-type endopeptidase, Peptidase A1 family
01

Overview

Pepsinogen 3, group I (pepsinogen A) (PGA3) is a zymogen (inactive precursor) of the digestive enzyme pepsin, part of the peptidase A1 family of aspartic endopeptidases. It is produced and secreted by gastric chief cells in the stomach, where it is autocatalytically cleaved in acidic gastric juice to form the active protease pepsin. Pepsin catalyzes the breakdown of dietary proteins into peptides, playing a crucial role in gastric digestion. Serum levels of pepsinogen A can be used as a biomarker for certain gastric diseases, notably atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. PGA3 is encoded by a gene found in a cluster of pepsinogen genes on human chromosome 11
