Peptidyl transferase is a ribozyme located in the large subunit of the bacterial ribosome, specifically within the 23S rRNA component of the 50S subunit. It catalyzes peptide bond formation between adjacent amino acids during protein synthesis and is also responsible for peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis, which releases the newly synthesized polypeptide at translation termination. Many antibiotics target this center to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.
