The peptidyl transferase center (PTC) is the catalytic core of the large ribosomal subunit in bacteria, specifically located within the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit. It is responsible for catalyzing peptide bond formation between adjacent amino acids and hydrolysis of peptidyl-tRNA to release the completed polypeptide chain at translation termination. Many antibiotics target bacterial protein synthesis by binding to or near the PTC.
