Overview

Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is a synthetic, ten-carbon perfluorinated carboxylic acid that is widely recognized as a persistent organic pollutant and a member of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) family [PubChem CID 9555]. It is not a therapeutic target but rather a xenobiotic that bioaccumulates in human and animal tissues, particularly the liver and blood [ATSDR PFAS Tox Profile]. PFDA exerts its biological effects primarily by acting as a potent agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), which regulates lipid metabolism and cellular energy homeostasis [PubMed: 11101315]. Exposure to PFDA has been linked to a variety of adverse health outcomes, including hepatotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and disruption of the endocrine system [PubMed: 28911738]. Furthermore, its structural similarity to fatty acids allows it to interfere with fatty acid binding proteins and transport mechanisms, leading to systemic metabolic disturbances [PubMed: 15585365]. Mechanism of action

Perfluorodecanoic acid is an environmental contaminant and not a therapeutic target; therefore, there are no drugs designed to target it. Its own toxicological mechanism involves the activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha) and interference with lipid metabolism.
