Peripheral Blood Vessel (Vasodilation)

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Homeostatic Mechanism
01

Overview

Peripheral blood vessel vasodilation involves the widening of blood vessels, primarily arteries and arterioles, leading to increased blood flow to tissues. It is crucial for regulating tissue perfusion, oxygenation, thermoregulation, and blood pressure. The process is mediated by various factors, including nitric oxide (NO) and other endothelium-derived relaxing factors, which induce relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Impaired vasodilation contributes to diseases such as hypertension and peripheral artery disease. Vasodilators are used therapeutically to manage hypertension, angina, and heart failure.
