Overview

Purified components of the Bordetella pertussis bacterium used in acellular pertussis vaccines (aP). These antigens, including Pertussis Toxin (PT), Filamentous Hemagglutinin (FHA), Pertactin (PRN), and Fimbriae types 2 and 3 (FIM2/3), are designed to induce immunity against whooping cough. They stimulate both antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immune responses, targeting secreted toxins or surface proteins to neutralize their activity or prevent bacterial adhesion. However, aP-induced immunity differs from natural infection, potentially leading to waning immunity and the emergence of strains lacking certain vaccine-included proteins. Newer vaccines may include adenylate cyclase toxin.
