Overview

NB1000S is a proprietary, genetically engineered strain of the gut commensal bacterium Phocaeicola vulgatus (formerly Bacteroides vulgatus), developed by Novome Biotechnologies as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) [3, 6, 12]. It is specifically designed to treat enteric hyperoxaluria, a condition where excessive absorption of dietary oxalate leads to elevated urinary oxalate levels, recurrent kidney stones, and potential chronic kidney disease [5, 9]. The bacterium is engineered to express a complete metabolic pathway for the degradation of oxalate within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing the amount of oxalate available for absorption into the systemic circulation [3, 5, 12]. NB1000S is administered as part of a combination product called NOV-001, which includes the prebiotic NB2000P (a seaweed-derived polysaccharide) to facilitate its engraftment and allow for controlled colonization levels in the gut [3, 9, 10]. By lowering the intestinal oxalate burden, NB1000S aims to reduce urinary oxalate excretion and mitigate the risk of progressive kidney damage [5, 9]. Clinical trials have shown that the strain can successfully colonize the human gut in a dose-dependent manner relative to the prebiotic intake [9, 12].
