Phosphorus Homeostasis (Systemic)

Molecular classification
Homeostatic Process, Endocrine Regulation
01

Overview

Phosphorus homeostasis refers to the systemic regulation of phosphate (inorganic phosphorus, Pi) levels in the body. This process is essential for numerous biological functions, including energy metabolism, cell signaling, skeletal development, and bone integrity. The body maintains serum phosphate within a narrow range through coordinated actions involving the intestine (absorption), kidneys (reabsorption and excretion), and bone (storage and release), primarily mediated by PTH, calcitriol, and FGF23. Disruption at any point can lead to disorders such as hypophosphatemia/hyperphosphatemia with consequences for skeletal health.
