Photoelectrochemical activity refers to the physicochemical process where light energy is converted into electrical energy through electrochemical reactions occurring at the interface of a semiconductor and an electrolyte (Wikipedia, 2023). In biomedical research, this activity is harnessed to develop highly sensitive biosensors used to detect various biomarkers, such as glucose, DNA, or specific proteins, by measuring changes in photocurrent output (NIH, PMC8465646).
