In clinical pharmacology, the ECF is not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, but rather a physiological space targeted by osmotic agents and volume expanders to treat conditions such as shock, dehydration, and cerebral edema (DrugBank, DB00742). Management of this compartment is vital in critical care, where fluid resuscitation and electrolyte replacement are used to stabilize patients with acute volume loss or distribution issues. Monitoring of the ECF is essential to prevent complications such as pulmonary edema or severe electrolyte imbalances.
