Pituitary thyrotropin suppression refers to the reduction of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) secretion by the pituitary gland. This is primarily achieved through negative feedback from circulating thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Clinically, it is often induced by exogenous thyroid hormone administration, particularly in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer post-surgery, to minimize stimulation of any remaining cancer cells. However, it carries risks such as cardiovascular complications and bone loss.
Exogenous thyroid hormone (T3/T4) administration leads to negative feedback on the pituitary gland, suppressing TSH secretion by direct action on nuclear receptors within thyrotrope cells. This reduces stimulation of the thyroid gland and/or residual thyroid cancer cells.
