Overview
Plasmodium falciparum is a protozoan parasite and the most virulent species causing malaria in humans. The blood stage of P. falciparum refers to the phase of its life cycle when it infects human red blood cells (RBCs), leading to clinical symptoms and transmission potential. The parasite undergoes a 48-hour intraerythrocytic developmental cycle and can modify host RBC surfaces, leading to cytoadherence and sequestration in capillaries. Key features include ring forms, high-grade parasitemia, and crescent/banana-shaped gametocytes.
