Overview

Plastoquinone is a lipophilic quinone cofactor essential to photosynthetic electron transport in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. It functions within specialized binding sites in photosystems II and I, accepting and donating electrons while facilitating proton translocation across thylakoid membranes. At the QB site in PSII, plastoquinone accepts two electrons and two protons before being released and replaced by a fresh molecule, while the QA site maintains a tightly bound plastoquinone that transfers single electrons. Although structurally similar to ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10), plastoquinone is specific to photosynthetic organisms and does not represent a traditional pharmaceutical target for human disease treatment.
