Target intelligence / Profile preview
Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1) mRNA is the transcript encoding the CD31 protein, a 130-kDa transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily (UniProt: P16284). This mRNA is predominantly expressed in vascular endothelial cells, platelets, and various leukocyte subsets. The resulting protein facilitates leukocyte transendothelial migration and maintains endothelial junctional integrity (PubMed: 11544343). In disease contexts, PECAM-1 mRNA expression is often modulated during inflammatory responses, atherosclerosis, and tumor angiogenesis (PubMed: 25611145). Therapeutic strategies targeting this mRNA, such as siRNA-mediated knockdown or antisense oligonucleotides, aim to downregulate PECAM-1 protein levels. This approach is intended to mitigate excessive inflammation or inhibit pathological blood vessel growth in cancers (PubMed: 17606475). While most clinical focus remains on the protein product, the mRNA itself serves as a critical regulatory target for RNA-based precision medicine. Targeting the mRNA allows for a more upstream intervention compared to traditional protein-binding antibodies.
RNA interference or antisense-mediated degradation of the mRNA transcript to inhibit the synthesis of PECAM-1 protein (PubMed: 17606475).
