Overview

Plutonium, americium, and curium are synthetic, radioactive actinide elements with significant radiological hazard. They have no known physiological function, are intensely radioactive, and pose severe health risks as environmental contaminants. Plutonium is used in nuclear fuel and weapons; americium is found in smoke detectors and as a neutron source; curium is mainly used for scientific research and power generation in space applications. Even minute exposure can cause toxicity, organ damage, and increased cancer risk due to their emission of alpha particles and long biological half-lives in the body.
