Target intelligence / Profile preview
Poliovirus, measles virus, mumps virus, and rubella virus are a group of distinct human viral pathogens that are primarily targeted by childhood immunization programs. Poliovirus (Enterovirus C) is a picornavirus that infects the gastrointestinal tract and can spread to the central nervous system, causing paralytic poliomyelitis (CDC, 2024). Measles virus and mumps virus are members of the Paramyxoviridae family; measles causes a severe systemic infection with high fever and respiratory symptoms, while mumps is characterized by painful swelling of the salivary glands (StatPearls, 2023). Rubella virus is the causative agent of German measles, which is typically mild in children but can cause devastating birth defects, known as congenital rubella syndrome, if a woman is infected during pregnancy (WHO, 2023). These viruses are targeted by vaccines such as the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) and Polio vaccines, which stimulate the host's immune system to provide long-lasting protection (FDA, 2023). While these vaccines have significantly reduced the global burden of these diseases, challenges remain regarding vaccine hesitancy and the management of outbreaks in under-vaccinated populations.
Induction of active immunity through the presentation of viral antigens, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and memory B and T cells.
