Overview

Poliovirus capsid proteins are the structural components of the poliovirus outer shell. In inactivated polio vaccines (IPV), these proteins are derived from chemically inactivated poliovirions, rendering them non-infectious but preserving their antigenic properties. The capsid comprises VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4, arranged in an icosahedral structure. These proteins elicit a protective immune response by presenting conformational epitopes, particularly D-antigen epitopes, without causing disease. The capsid's integrity is crucial for maintaining immunogenicity, and its interaction with the CD155 receptor is important for cell entry during natural infection, though this interaction does not occur with inactivated virus. The three serotypes (PV-1, PV-2, PV-3) are all used to prepare IPV.
