The inactivated poliovirus antigen (types 1, 2, and 3) is a viral protein complex derived from poliovirus strains representing the three main serotypes (PV1, PV2, PV3), purified and chemically inactivated (typically with formalin) to eliminate infectivity while preserving key antigenic epitopes, primarily the D-antigen. These antigens are the active immunogenic ingredients in inactivated polio vaccines (IPV, sIPV) and are used to elicit protective humoral immunity in humans, preventing poliomyelitis by inducing neutralizing antibodies. The poliovirus itself is a non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family, with a capsid composed of proteins VP1–VP4. The D-antigen configuration is critical for inducing a protective immune response and is carefully monitored during vaccine production to ensure potency and safety.
