Poliovirus Type 1, 2, and 3 Antigens

Molecular classification
Viral structural protein, Antigen
01

Overview

Poliovirus type 1, 2, and 3 antigens encompass the structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4) that form the capsid of the three poliovirus serotypes. These antigens, particularly the conformational 'D' epitopes on VP1-VP3, are critical for inducing neutralizing antibodies and providing protective immunity following natural infection or vaccination. The three serotypes exhibit distinct antigenic properties, necessitating serotype-specific immunity. Poliovirus antigens are targets for vaccine development (OPV and IPV) and laboratory diagnostics.
