Overview

The inactivated poliovirus type 1 capsid protein is a key component of inactivated polio vaccines (IPV). It is derived from the outer shell of the poliovirus serotype 1, rendered non-infectious through chemical treatment, typically with formalin. While inactivated, the protein retains its antigenicity, enabling it to stimulate the production of neutralizing antibodies in vaccinated individuals. These antibodies provide protection against subsequent infection with live poliovirus type 1. The capsid comprises VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4 proteins. Its primary function is to protect the viral RNA, mediate host cell attachment, and initiate uncoating. In the context of IPV, the inactivated capsid protein elicits an immune response without causing disease.
