Poliovirus Type 1 Capsid Protein Antigen (Mahoney Strain)

Molecular classification
Viral protein, Capsid protein, Antigen
01

Overview

The poliovirus type 1 capsid protein antigen, specifically from the Mahoney strain, is a structural protein component of the poliovirus serotype 1. The Mahoney strain is a wild-type reference strain widely used in research and vaccine development. The viral capsid comprises four proteins: VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4. Among these, VP1 is the major surface-exposed protein and plays a critical role in receptor binding and immune recognition. In inactivated polio vaccines, formalin-inactivated Mahoney strain virions containing intact capsids are used for immunization.

Mechanism of action

Neutralizing antibodies bind to the capsid protein, preventing viral entry into host cells. Inactivated vaccines stimulate the production of these antibodies.
