Overview

Inactivated poliovirus type 2 capsid protein is a component of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) used to protect against poliomyelitis. The capsid proteins, including VP0 (which is later cleaved into VP4 and VP2), VP1, and VP3, are responsible for receptor binding and antigenicity. Inactivation, typically with formalin, renders the virus non-infectious while preserving its antigenic properties, allowing it to induce an immune response without causing disease. While wild poliovirus type 2 has been eradicated, inactivated poliovirus type 2 capsid protein remains crucial for maintaining immunity and preventing the re-emergence of poliomyelitis.
