The poliovirus type 2 capsid protein antigen (MEF1 strain) is a structural protein complex forming the outer shell of the poliovirus type 2 virion. The MEF1 strain is a laboratory reference strain of wild-type poliovirus serotype 2, historically used in research and as a standard for diagnostic and vaccine development purposes. The capsid consists of four structural proteins: VP1, VP2, VP3 (surface-exposed), and VP4 (internal). Antigenic sites critical for immune recognition are primarily located on VP1, but also involve regions on VP2 and VP3. The capsid proteins encapsulate and protect the viral RNA genome, mediate host cell attachment and entry, and elicit neutralizing antibody responses in hosts.
