Poly(A)-binding protein nuclear-like 1 (PABPN1L) is a maternal-effect RNA-binding protein essential for normal oocyte maturation and early embryonic development[2][3][5]. PABPN1L binds the poly(A) tails of maternal mRNA in the oocyte cytoplasm, functioning as an adapter to recruit the BTG4–CCR4-NOT deadenylase complex, promoting deadenylation and degradation of a specific subset of maternal transcripts during the maternal-to-zygotic transition. PABPN1L is distinct from other poly(A)-binding proteins by its specific expression in oocytes and unique partner interactions necessary for early developmental processes. Loss of PABPN1L in mammals results in developmental arrest at the two-cell stage and female infertility due to impaired clearance of maternal mRNAs[2][3][4][5]. No drugs are known to interact with this target, and it is not established as a clinical biomarker or therapeutic target.
