Overview

Poly(rC)-binding protein 1 (PCBP1) is a multifunctional RNA-binding protein involved in the regulation of mRNA splicing, stabilization, and translation, as well as cytosolic iron chaperone activity essential for safe iron delivery and storage[1][2][3]. PCBP1, along with other PCBP family members, contains three conserved KH domains that enable sequence-specific RNA and DNA binding, especially to C-rich regions[1][2]. PCBP1 plays key roles in tumor suppression, including regulation of alternative splicing of genes involved in cancer cell invasion and metastasis[5]. In the nervous system, it modulates processes implicated in neurodegeneration, such as neuroinflammation and protein ubiquitination[4]. PCBP1 is considered a potential therapeutic target in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and iron-related metabolic disorders, but no clinically approved drugs directly target this molecule as of the latest reports[2][5][6].
