Overview

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a **Gram-negative, anaerobic, nonmotile, rod-shaped bacterium** that is a major pathogen in the oral cavity, especially associated with periodontal disease.[1][3][5] Its pathogenicity is due to a variety of virulence factors, including proteases (especially gingipains), fimbriae, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), capsule, and the ability to modulate and evade the host immune response.[1][5][6][7] The bacterium thrives in subgingival biofilms, degrading host tissue and manipulating inflammatory signaling, and is also associated with systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.[1][3]
