Overview

The potassium channel protein responsible for the transient outward current, commonly referred to as Ito or specifically Ito1 in cardiac tissue, is a voltage-gated potassium channel that plays a critical role in the early phase of repolarization during the cardiac action potential. This current is characterized by its rapid activation and subsequent quick inactivation following membrane depolarization. It contributes significantly to phase 1 of the cardiac action potential, producing a brief repolarizing "notch" before the plateau phase. Alterations or dysfunctions in Ito are implicated in arrhythmias and other cardiac pathologies due to their effect on action potential duration and morphology.
