Overview

The potassium channel protein Kir3.x subunit, also known as IKACh, is part of the G protein-gated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channel family. These channels are crucial regulators of cellular excitability in both the heart and nervous system. Functional channels are tetramers formed by combinations of Kir3.1, Kir3.2, Kir3.3, and Kir3.4 subunits. Activation occurs via Gβγ dimers released upon activation of Gi/o-coupled G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). IKACh mediates parasympathetic slowing of heart rate and modulates inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in neurons.
