Overview

Potassium homeostasis refers to the physiological processes that maintain total body potassium content and plasma potassium concentration within narrow limits, despite significant variations in dietary intake. This involves internal potassium homeostasis (regulation of intracellular/extracellular distribution) and external potassium homeostasis (regulation of renal excretion). Key regulators include the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, hormones (insulin, catecholamines, aldosterone), and renal mechanisms. Circadian rhythms also play a role. Disruptions can lead to hypokalemia or hyperkalemia, with serious consequences for cardiac and neuromuscular function.
