Overview

The Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily D member 2 (Kv4.2) is a primary pore-forming subunit responsible for the transient, rapidly inactivating A-type potassium current (IA) in the central nervous system (UniProt: Q9NZV8). It is highly expressed in the dendrites of hippocampal and cortical pyramidal neurons, where it plays a critical role in regulating dendritic excitability, signal integration, and the back-propagation of action potentials (PubMed: 11069951). Dysregulation or mutations in the KCND2 gene are linked to neurological disorders such as temporal lobe epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder, as well as neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease (PubMed: 24501277).
