Prostaglandin synthesis enzyme (cyclooxygenase)

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Cyclooxygenases (COX), also known as prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthases (PTGS), are enzymes that catalyze the first committed step in prostaglandin biosynthesis. They convert arachidonic acid to prostaglandin G2 (PGG2) and then to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a precursor for various prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and prostacyclins. There are two main isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, with differing expression patterns and roles in physiological and pathological processes. COX enzymes are targets for NSAIDs which inhibit prostaglandin production to reduce inflammation and pain.
